November’s DF Gathering featured a presentation on Angela
House, a transition facility for women re-entering society after
incarceration. The Poverty Study Action Committee organized the
presentation, which featured an organization the DF has supported for
years. Sr. Maureen O’Connell, Founder & Executive Director of
Angela House made the presentation, which described the mission of Angela
House (AH), a bit of its history, and the approach AH uses to help its
residents assimilate productively back into society. The program,
which is tailored to each individual resident’s specific needs, has had
incredible success moving AH women back into society.
Sr. Maureen introduced LaSian, a graduate from AH, to
share her experiences and the impact AH had on her life. In her 15
months at AH, LaSian developed self-respect, became employed and is now a
self-sufficient member of society. LaSian has reconnected with her
children and is now involved in her grandchildren’s lives. Her story is
truly amazing and a great example of the impact Sr. Maureen and Angela
House are having on formerly incarcerated women’s lives. LaSian
continues to work with AH, now mentoring its residents on their journey
back into society.
During the meeting, Sr. Maureen asked how many in the room
have helped AH over the years and about half of the Family members
present raised their hands! The presentation was really encouraging
that our efforts have helped AH with its mission. And also very
motivational to continue supporting AH! The next volunteer activity
for DF members to help AH is a Christmas Cookie baking and decorating
party with its residents on December 10 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Sharon
Copper and Abby Linesch are organizing the event. You can sign-up
