Over 60 Dominican Family members took a respite from Hurricane Harvey recovery on September 11 to kick-off our 2017-2018 year! Based on the voracious conversation before and during dinner, everyone had a good time catching up after our summer break while tentatively sharing storm stories. Unfortunately, many Family members were not able to attend as they continue to recover from the storm. We are aware of significant storm damage suffered by Laurie Bookout and Mike Brady, Maria and Paul Burdick, Lauren Emmerson and Margaret Mayer, Mary Jo Langston, Lynne and Mike Morris, Emilie Robert and Ed Hobbs, Debbie Sieck, Jim and Ginny Studdert, Terry and Jim Wykowski. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Others missed the meeting because they were busy helping family and friends recover – God bless you. If you suffered damage, please contact either Sr. Carol (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Kevin Smith (email@example.com) so we can organize any support you may need from the DF.
After dinner, Kevin explained the theme for the year, “Searching for Truth, Nourishing Compassion” and rolled out the year’s calendar. Special topics are planned for four Gatherings:
Productively Engaging Those With Different Views by Interfaith Ministries
San Francisco Nativity School and Angela House presentations
Refugees in Houston by Amaanah Refugee Services
Updating our DF Vision
To prepare for the year, please reflect on a situation where you were embroiled in a discussion with others who held a different opinion. How did it go? What went well? What would you have liked to do differently?
Kevin also introduced the Committee leads and encouraged everyone to join a committee to build Community and develop deeper relationships with other Family members.
The presentation Kevin used for the meeting, to which the DF Mission and Vision statements have been added, can be accessed by clicking the following link.
Special thanks to the Hospitality Committee, Prayer Committee and DFLT (who provided the food) for a great Gathering! We look forward to journeying together and living the Dominican Charism during 2017-2018!
