Nov 2016: StoryCorps Launch-Let's Record a Story with a Sister!
We are excited to launch our “Dominican History StoryCorps Project”. As we discussed at last night's meeting, StoryCorps is a non-profit organization whose mission it is “to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs”. People from around the country record interviews which document their personal stories and submit them to StoryCorps so that their recordings can be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected more than 60,000 interview with over 100,000 participants. It is “the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered”. Many of you have probably listened to some of these stories on NPR. If you want more information about StoryCorps go to www.storycorps.org.
We would like to record and archive the stories of the Dominican Sisters, first for our own archives. That’s where we need your help: We are looking for Dominican Family members who are interested in conducting interviews. Interviews will take place on December 3, 2016 and a day in January (TBD) at the Dominican Motherhouse. Interviewers will be assisted in every step of the process from interviewing and recording through editing. Each interview will likely take about 2-2.5 hours to complete and edit. If would like to participate in this project, please click here and submit your request of the sister(s) you would like to interview. If you don't know a sister, we will match you with one to interview!
Once you have been matched with a sister, you will receive an email with that sister’s biography and detailed instructions on the interview process. It will be your responsibility to call the sister to arrange an interview time on one of the designated interview days. Ideally all interviews will take place on the prearranged interview dates. However, if extenuating circumstances prevent you from being available on one of these dates, please contact Mary Gangelhoff (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Richard Gillespie (email@example.com) to see if an alternate time can be arranged.
We are very excited to have our Dominican heritage recorded and archived so that future generations can learn about the remarkable women who are the Dominican Sisters of Houston. Our goal is to interview all of the Houston Dominicans by the end of January. It’s an ambitious project to be sure!! But we have faith that the Dominican Family can make this historic effort a reality.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact Carolyn Bobo (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Mary Gangelhoff.
