The
Dominican Sisters of Houston presented the Sr. Pauline Gannon Award to
Pilar Hernandez (Pictured below); recognizing her countless years of
work managing the Dominican garden.
Pilar Hernandez has been with the Dominican Sisters Community
Garden since 2008, managing it since 2013. The garden produces,
on average, 1,000 pounds of produce per year, although 2018 was
record-setting with over 1,300 pounds! Our donation sites are
Star of Hope on Reed Road, and Manna House on Blodgett Street. The
garden produces in all four seasons, is organic, and totally a donation
garden; it is affiliated with Urban Harvest. Pilar Hernandez does
all the planning and securing of plants/seeds, soil management/rotation
of crops, and skillfully teaches our volunteers who come on Tuesday
mornings. She is faithfully watchful about every detail:
when to water, when to harvest, when to plant additional veggies.
Pilar and her husband Jorge are from Chile and became U.S.
citizens in 2018. - Sr. Heloise Cruzat, OP

Christmas
Cookie Decorating at Angela House
Several Dominican Family members celebrated the Advent season
by joining the women of Angela House for their annual Christmas cookie
decorating. As you can tell from the photos, a great time was had by
all. The women of Angela House use this event to prepare goodie bags
for their family members, co-workers, and others in their lives.
Photos are courtesy of Dominican Family member, Phylliss
Chappell, MD.
