Advent Gift Drive
Our Dominican Family Poverty Committee is
sponsoring an Advent gift drive for the San Francisco Nativity Academy of Houston,
a tuition free pre-K – 8th grade school for low income students.
Dr. Lupe Hernandez, Nativity Academy principal, has made a special request
for sleeping mats for 3, 4 , and 5 year olds, which can be purchased from
Amazon and sent directly to the school:
amazon.com/dp/B00620G7...
For other donation ideas, see San Francisco Nativity’s wish list: nativityhouston.org/wi...
You can have items shipped directly to the school, or bring them to our Dominican
Family Advent Brunch, and we will deliver them.
Thank you for helping!!

Order Dominican Family Shirts
This is a great time of year to purchase a white shirt from
the Lands End website with the Dominican Family logo. We are asking people

Practicing the
Arts in the Healing Professions
At DIA Gatherings, she is appreciated primarily for her dancing and
drumming. But in Houston, Texas, Dr.
Phylliss Chapell is recognized as a teaching physician who
will soon introduce an academic course entitled The Healer’s Art Elective. As
Co-director of the program, she will be offering this enriching opportunity
to first year medical students from McGregor Medical School and Baylor
College of Medicine. In her “spare time,” Phylliss recharges her own batteries
by playing with “Joy of Djembe Drumming,” an ensemble performing with the
traditional African hand drum. Besides providing healthful recreation for
themselves, these percussion artists reach across continents to address one
of Africa’s most serious problems, access to potable water. For two
consecutive years, they have held benefit performances to raise money for
the H Kumi Foundation, a funding organization founded by an immigrant to
finance a system for providing clean water for the people in Ghana.
Phylliss promises to give us more detail about her Healer’s Art Elective
in our next OPalette.
