As we draw ever so closer to election day, we wanted to share some resources with you as you make decisions about your vote as well as to help navigate the sometimes challenging conversations about this year’s election you may be having with family and friends.  As they say, we as Dominicans are called “to have the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other” as we study the signs of our times. 

Breath Life into Faithful Citizenship

Dominican Family member Neil Douglas, has passed on the attached essay titled, “Breath Life Into Faithful Citizenship” by Lina Flores Hilko. Lina is the daughter of Liuda Flores an advocate with The Metropolitan Organization and provided an interesting perspective on faithful citizenship.  

Blessed are the Peacemakers

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the University of St. Thomas are co-hosting a webinar series titled “Blessed are the Peacemakers” that addresses the role of Catholics in the current political climate and election season. The series will be on Tuesdays in October, focusing on faithful citizenship issues and the call as Catholics to be active in the political sphere.

The remaining session is on Tuesday, October 27 at both 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and will feature a brief 15- to 20-minute talk. Following the talk, participants will have the opportunity for a facilitated small group discussion, followed by a large group Q&A. Small group discussions will be available in English and Spanish.

This series is for young adult and adult Catholics who are interested in what the Church teaches on this topic, those who are frustrated with the increasing hostility in the news and social media, and those who want a safe place to discuss these issues with charity for the other.

Equally Sacred

NETWORK and advocacy group in Washington, DC inspired by Catholic Sisters that works to create a society that promotes justice and the dignity of all in the shared abundance of God’s creation has published an overview of how each candidate for the presidency stands on a variety of issues titled, “Equally Sacred Priorities.”  Click here to view the document.
