“The Call to Preach”

On the first day of February The Dominican Family hosted over 40 members gathering virtually via Zoom.
Announcements:
- Lenten Prayer Books will be available soon. The pick-up sites will be at the Motherhouse, St. Pius X, St. Agnes Academy or they will be mailed to you if that was your preference.
- Our March meeting will feature a dynamic speaker: Megan Phelps-Roper, the author of “Unfollow: a memoir of Leaving the Westboro Church” It will be a very fascinating meeting.
- NEXT GATHERING – Tuesday, March 2
- 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
- Please note that we will meet on TUESDAY next month.
The Gathering:
- We began the meeting with a prayer written by our own prayer leaders entitled
- “God of Life and Diversity”.
- The poverty committee, led by Shawna, introduced our 2 speakers for the evening:
- Diana Tang and Elizabeth Valdez
- The speakers were from The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) which is an organization that builds sustainable power across lines of differences.
- There are 10 sister organizations within the state of Texas. Members are institutional, using existing organizations such as congregations, unions, schools and nonprofits to draw a group of people with diverse backgrounds and objectives to serve a common goal. Their current agenda of issues includes:
- COVID-19 Response & Healthcare
- Police Reform
- Workforce Development
- Education
- Immigration
- Harvey Recovery
- The speakers were very informative and we had a good Q&A after they spoke. If you are interested in learning more about their organization go to the website: https://www.tmohouston.org/events
Final thoughts:
We closed out the meeting with the Dominican Blessing.

Stewardship of the Dominican Family
- The Dominican Family operates through the generosity of Family members as there are no dues required of our members.
- We prayerfully ask that you consider making a gift to the Dominican Family to help us continue providing quality gatherings, resources, and community partnership which include:
- Ongoing expenses to host and maintain our website and our Flocknotes subscription,
- Membership dues for the Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston Interfaith Council,
- The purchase of the Advent and Lent prayer booklets as well as the occasional speaker fees and,
- Hosting our annual Advent Brunch and Commitment Celebrations
- The Dominican Family is grateful for every gift as we recognize it is given from the heart to support our mission.
