The
Dominican Family and the Domincan Sisters of Houston gathered on
Saturday, December 14th to celebrate the Advent season with Prayer
and Brunch.

Our prayer
was led by Sr. Mary Jean Olsovsky, OP. Seasonal music was
provided by Sr. Ann Marie Flusche, OP (piano) and Bonnie Senteno
(cantor). Bonnie is in the current Dominican Family Formation
class and is scheduled to make her first commitment in April.

We were all
moved by the preaching of Dominican Family member and Future
Chairperson, Anna Sklut. Anna reminded us that the darkness in
our world is as real today as it has ever been, making it imperative
for each of us as Dominicans to bring the Light to all those areas
needing transformation and God's healing. To read Anna's challenging
homily, please click on the attached pdf.

How will
you and I choose to create a space for God in our world? How will
we choose to open our eyes that have been blind or clear our ears
that have been deaf? How will we choose to bloom, or rejoice in
joyful song? How are you being called to strengthen the hands that
are feeble or make firm the knees that are weak in our society?
Because it is in these spaces where we “will see the glory of the
Lord / the splendor of our God.”

Sklut

Claire
Warner recognized with Pauline Gannon Award
The
Dominican Sisters of Houston recognized Claire Warner with the Mother
Pauline Gannon Award for her years of volunteer work with the
Sisters.
It was an
amazing morning...after listening to Anna' Sklut's challenge of
living amid the darkness, we found a beautiful answer with Claire
Warner's moving testimony. Every Monday for many years,
Claire has visited the aging Dominican Sisters at various locations.
Claire provides the sisters with a open heart and listening
ear. By her example and words, Claire preached to us about the
importance of keeping our elderly front and center, rather than in
the background. She emphasized the importance of human touch,
which she embodies by providing the sisters with regular manicures
and pedicures. Below is a brief excerpt from Claire's Acceptance
speech, to read her full and powerful preaching, please click on the

“Sometimes
we forget that it’s often the little things that make the biggest
impact... Holding someone’s hand, a smile, a simple acknowledgment,
a hug… sometimes it’s far too easy to let the elderly become
invisible... Our elderly should be put on pedestals. They’re our
matriarchs and patriarchs. They were the ones who created our
future… I’d just like to encourage each of us - me included - to do
just a little bit more for our elderly. And it doesn’t have to be
much, because every action makes a difference.” -

Of Course,
no Dominican Gathering would be complete without food and drink!
Family members and sisters were able to "catch up"
and share plans for the Christmas season, as we enjoyed our Brunch of
taquitos, mimosas and great sweets!
Come, O Come, Emanuel!
Best wishes
to you and your families this Christmas season. Let us remember
to be the light in the darkness we encounter and to especially
connect with our elderly friends and relatives this season!
